Slow Slow Day

30Nov08

After stumbling home from a night out on the town at 4am, I woke to the cacophony of Sydney morning traffic, odd bird songs, a slight hangover, and an urge to have lots of water and breakfast before midday. If there was a time to take it slow on a Sunday – this was the day for it.

‘Good morning baby. It’s 4am!… Time for me to go to sleep and for you to go to work!’

I woke Nicholas up promptly at 3:55am in a shower of soft snogs. The birds had just started their morning calls outside and the sun would not be making an appearance for another few hours. I made him coffee and heated up an almond croissant.

‘Before you go, do you mind tucking me in?’.

7 hours later, I had finally decided to roll out of bed. I have been surprised as of late as to how quickly I have reached a state of absolute peacefulness within myself. Without the worries of university of work and just the day to day ploddings of casual work and being on holidays, life has just been beautiful. We had thought of flying to Tokyo for a few days next week but with Christmas coming up, we decided that it was probably not the best idea financially. And besides, we’re a bit ‘airport’ed-out’ from the last few months of traveling.

Nicholas got back from work about 4 hours after I had woken up and I made a lovely steak au poivre for lunch/dinner which we had with oven-baked chips. I didn’t have any cognac lying around and I was too lazy to walk to the liquor store so I flamed some pinot noir with sauteed shallots and mixed it with beef stock and heavy cream – it was superb. The creamy and flavoursome sauce went perfectly with the pan-seared steak pressed in crushed peppercorns.

We took a ‘nap’ afterwards which eventuated into sleep. I decided to wake up because had a few things to do… so here I am but Nicholas is till asleep and I too will soon start sleeping again in a moment before Manic Monday threatens to consume me.

Life is too short to let moments pass by… if the setting sun shines in my room on a lovely Spring afternoon, I will not let it go – It enriches my soul to be able to do this.

And on another note, Christmas is just around the corner and the festive season has well and truly begun in Sydney. The Ho Ho Hos are out and so to are the fairy lights, Christmas trees and hopefully, the spirit of giving.
